The scope of the Canaries

Jules Verne Trophy
After two days at sea, Franck Cammas and its nine crew members were still in the holder's time Jules Verne Trophy, but since the latitude of Lisbon, Groupama 3 must contend with quiet zones, which do not facilitate its progress ...

The Canaries wind field is not very simple to understand on the third day of sea! All last night, the crew had to stay very attentive to the slightest variations in the breeze, which was directed at south-eastern sector but mainly that has fluctuated between ten and fourteen knots! Work on the bridge for three quarters of three men who take turns every three hours. But Labour also at the chart table to determine the best path in this area alternating small puffs of breeze, the breathlessness zéphire, gradual rotation eastward ... So since the latitude of Cape St Vincent (southern Portugal), Franck Cammas and his crew have decided to shift from the direct route to pass under the islands of Madeira and beyond Saturday evening, the Canary Islands by West . A slight lengthening of the road by this situation is a bit unusual weather.

A problem of hook

Last night was not conducive to high speeds, especially as Groupama 3 has undergone a small technical problem that required him to stop twice.

"We are this afternoon cross-wind and the breeze, which remained weak this morning, began to return: we went from 20 to 30 knots! But this night, we had a small concern to hook (locking system with a veil on top of the mast) gennaker because a piece is bent but Loïc Le Mignon has temporarily solved this problem. He still had to stop twice to intervene at the top of the mast! », said Yves Parlier, the navigator on board
