Prader-Willi France association

For this 2010 season, OC Events, the organiser of the Extreme Sailing Series circuit, wishes to associate all participating crews with a charitable association of their choice. The winner of the circuit will receive a cheque which it will then present to this association.

It has been a natural progression for the Groupama Team, aware of the problems and issues involved with the Foundation, to decide to support the Prader-Willi France association, whose objectives are to inform families and professionals about the Prader-Willi syndrome, a little known about disease, to encourage research and improve the quality of life for those affected by it.

Franck Cammas :

"I'm always proud to be able to share my trips out on the water with others. Our sport inspires people and helping an association which is battling, day in day out, against a rare condition is all the more motivating for me. The courage, tenacity and solidarity demonstrated by those affected by the Prader Willi syndrome is exemplary. The Groupama Team, together with the Groupama Health Foundation, is naturally concerned by the problems of rare conditions and hence this initiative is very dear to their hearts. This additional motivation will, I hope, enable me to help provide assistance, which is something the association is most in need of in its battle against this condition, which causes a great deal of pain amongst both the children affected and their families."

The Prader-Willi France association gathers together nearly 600 children and adults affected by the syndrome, comprises more than 1,000 members (parents, those suffering from the disease, families, friends and professionals) and has over 1,700 other registered contacts.

François Besnier, President of the Prader-Willi France association:

"Through his extreme sailing, Franck Cammas fuels people's dreams. And our children need dreams. Seeking out your limits, transcending them and achieving the impossible. Putting up a fight, overcoming failure and starting over again. Freely but lucidly accepting risk. Succeeding thanks to team solidarity. By getting the Groupama Team, Franck Cammas and Prader-Willi France together, this is the message we want to convey to all those who are working with us towards a more humane world, especially for those who are different and handicapped in some way, like our children."

What is a rare condition?

The European Union defines a rare condition as a chronic or potentially fatal illness whose prevalence is less than 1/ 2,000 and which requires particular effort to develop a treatment.
• A condition is said to be rare if less than one person in 2,000 suffers from it, which in France equates to less than 30,000 people with a given condition.
• We can list nearly 7,000 identified rare conditions, 80% of which are of genetic origin.
• Five new pathologies are described in the world each week.
• 50% of rare conditions are serious and incapacitating.
