38.2 knots, a new reference time for Groupama 2

Défi de Douarnenez - Penn ar Bed Finistère Record
13th to 15th of July
In blustery conditions this Friday afternoon, kitesurfers, windsurfers, Imoca monohulls and Orma multihulls put on a great show off Douarnenez with a steady series of runs following on one after the other close to the jetty in Port Rosmeur.

The best performance of the day went to Lionel Lemonchois and his crew. By racking up 31.86 knots over the 4 mile course in the Bay of Douarnenez today, Gitana 11 was the fastest boat of the fleet, Groupama 2 scoring the second best time by clocking up 30.90 knots. "We achieved the record speed for the boat with 38.2 knots... Conditions were absolutely spot on today. Unfortunately tomorrow the wind is set to drop right off though" said Franck Cammas on his return to shore.

As far as the monohulls were concerned, Jean Le Cam on VM Matériaux outwitted Michel Desjoyeaux on his new Foncia with 18.41 knots of boat speed.

An unusual image! Steve Ravussin, a speed fanatic and fervent kitesurfer, couldn't pass up the opportunity to sail alongside with Groupama 2. During a run, the Swiss sailor relished the chance to measure himself against the 60', which evidently he is more used to seeing from the inside as opposed to the outside...
