Groupama 4

Classé dans : Groupama 4

Monohull for the Volvo Ocean Race

The first monohull built by Groupama sailing team, is a pure production (or almost...) of the Morbihan, a region in South-West Brittany. Designed by the Franco-Argentinean architect Juan Kouyoumdjian, Groupama 4 was optimised by the Groupama sailing team's research office based in Lorient, built at the Multiplast yard in Vannes and equipped with a mast manufactured at Lorima in Lorient.

Launched on 14 May 2011, the first French Volvo Open 70 is a resolutely offshore boat. Built and designed to perform well in breezy conditions with the wind on her stern or on her beam, Groupama 4 is a compromise between the requirements of the class measurement and the quest for high performance.

The 70 foot (21.50m) monohull quickly reaches speeds of over 25 knots. With a spar comprising just three spreaders, rather than the usual four, and revamped cockpit ergonomics, Groupama 4 stands out from her rivals through the aforementioned innovations, as well as those below deck.

Christened in Lorient, her port of registry, on 11 June, Groupama 4 is carrying the country's sailing hopes in its French crew. Gérard Petipas, a loyal friend of Éric Tabarly and an appointed sailor on his Pen Duicks, is the proud patron of the boat.

The positions aboard Groupama 4

The positions aboard Groupama 4

Skipper: Franck Cammas

The skipper makes the decisions aboard. He is responsible for his crew in the same way as a commander is responsible for his passengers. The master of the ship, he isn't alone and relies on the support of his crew to drive the boat.

Navigator (1): Jean-Luc Nélias

The navigator gathers the weather data and analyses it so as to simulate different trajectory scenarios. A genuine strategy guru, the navigator is also in constant liaison with the skipper.

Tactician (2)

The tactician is the helmsman's informant, especially in the inshore races and on the start lines. He conveys the information he gleans from observing the race zone to the helmsman and navigator.

Trimmer (3) Sébastien Marsset, Erwan Israël & Martin Strömberg

With their hands on the sheets, the various trimmers aboard are constantly on the look-out for the slightest wind shift.

Helmsman (4) Damian Foxall, Thomas Coville & Charles Caudrelier

With the steering wheel in his hands, the helmsman literally ‘pilots' the boat. In constant communication with his crew, he decides on the timing of the manœuvres.

Pitman (5) Philip Harmer

He choreographs manœuvres in the cockpit. The pitman coordinates the winches and the winch pedestals (nicknamed coffee grinders).

Watch leader

During offshore racing, the watch leader is responsible for coordinating the team on deck for the duration of his watch (four hours).

Grinder (6)

Standing upright facing the coffee grinders, the grinders take it in turns operating the winches and sheeting the sails. For certain manœuvres, a single man is enough whilst you need six to hoist the mainsail.

Bowman or No.1 (7) Martin Krite & Brad Marsh

The two bowmen are the acrobatic - tightrope walkers. They prepare the sail changes at the front of the boat. This very physical position is also one of the most dangerous aboard.

Media Crew Member (8) Yann Riou

The principle task of the media crew is to communicate photos and videos of the boat. He isn't allowed to take part in the manoeuvres but he does participate in life aboard: cooking, cleaning.
